    20th Annual Vocational Day
THE BIGGEST MBSR EVENT OF THE YEAR!

Miss California 2006, Jacquelynne Fontaine, Opera Star and Vocal Artist, for this year's motivational speaker
November 18, 2009: Over 140 Dana Hills and Aliso Niguel High School Seniors and several dignitaries to attend Monarch Beach Sunrise Rotary's 20th Annual Vocational Day.

The Monarch Beach Sunrise Rotary's 20th Annual Vocational Day is where MBSR members and civic minded local professionals from varying trades demonstrate to high school seniors from Dana Hills and Aliso Niguel High School the many and varied occupational choices available to high school senior students.

Vocational Service, one of Rotary's Avenues of Service, encourages Rotarians to serve others through their professions and to practice high ethical standards. Observed each Fall, Vocational Service Month spotlights Rotary club projects related to this avenue that offer an opportunity for members to use their professional skills in service projects.

This year's Vocational Day event is scheduled for Wednesday, November 18, 2009 and will be held at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Dana Point in the Pavilion room on the conference level, overlooking the blue Pacific Ocean. Our morning will begin with FREE breakfast at 6:45 a.m., followed by a motivational speaker concluding at 8:30 a.m.

SPECIAL MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER: MISS JACQUELYNNE FONTAINE: MONARCH BEACH SUNRISE ROTARY CLUB'S UPCOMING EVENTS: Nov 18, 2009, Meet Jacquelynne Fontaine, Miss California 2006, Opera Star - Vocal Artist We are honored to have Miss California 2006, Jacquelynne Fontaine, Opera Star and Vocal Artist, for this year's motivational speaker.

ABOUT MISS FONTAINE: In a recent review for her appearance in the Jacaranda Concert Series, Alan Rich called Jacquelynne Fontaine "an enchanting soprano new to us and all the more wondrous for that".

Some of you may remember Miss Fontaine from her outstanding performance of "O mio babbino caro" (from Gianni Schicchi) and "Ave Maria" (from Otello) at the St. Regis Gala and unveiling of the 2010 Italian Opera Festival back on May 30th at the St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort.

The 2008 NATS/LA "Singer of the Year", Ms. Fontaine has appeared as the guest soprano with many symphony orchestras & operas around the world. Her recent stage roles include Donna Anna in Don Giovanni (2009), Pamina in Mozart's Die Zauberflote (2008), touring Italy with the Tuscia Operafestival, Alma in Lee Hoiby's Summer and Smoke, Ilia in Mozart's Idomeneo with the USC Thornton Opera, and Cundegonde in Leonard Bernstein's Candide. She appeared with Broadway star Dale Kristien in "What a Pair 4," a breast cancer benefit for the John Wayne Cancer Institute, and "Help is on the Way for the Holidays VIII" at the Herbst Theater in San Francisco. She has also performed benefit recitals for the New West Symphony, Glendale Adventist Hospital, Center Stage Opera, and Habitat for Humanity. Professional recitals have included "Arts at St. Patrick's" in Thousand Oaks, "Songs of Summer" in Santa Monica, "NATS Young Artist of the Year" at Biola University, and in Boulder, CO.

On July 1st of 2006, Ms. Fontaine was crowned Miss California. At the Miss America 2007 competition in Las Vegas on January 29th, she placed in the top ten, won audience's choice for swimsuit, and won the preliminary talent award for her performance of "Vissi d'arte" from Puccini's Tosca. As Miss California, she visited Veteran's and Children's Hospitals, attended an Army Ball, and worked with diabetes organizations. During the year, she spoke to over 10,000 students in more than 50 schools about making healthy choices.

A magna cum laude graduate of California Lutheran University, Ms. Fontaine's previous teachers have included Diann Alexander, and Geraldine Decker of the Metropolitan Opera. She graduated with her masters of music with Departmental Honors and the Order of Arete from the USC Thornton School of Music in Spring 2008 and is currently working on her Doctorate of Musical and Vocal Art at USC.

You can learn more about Miss Fontaine on her web site at www.JacquelynneFontaine.net or friend her on Facebook at FaceBook.com/jacquelynnef

After Ms. Fontaine finishes her talk, the students will then leave the hotel with their hosts, and will "shadow" them while "on the job" until 11:30 a.m. The hosts and students have the option of attending a complimentary luncheon at On The Border Restaurant in Aliso Viejo from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

This is a day these students will take with them for the rest of their lives. We look forward to this event each year as Rotary teaches "Service Before Self" in deeds, to all the high school students who participate in this amazing day.

September 2, 2009: Special Guest Speaker, Orange County District Attorney, Tony Rackauckas Photo of Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas

SPECIAL GUEST SPEAKER: OCDA, Tony Rackauckas
    DATE: Wednesday, Sept 2, 2009
TIME: 7-7:30am soft start, meeting starts at 7:30am
    WHERE: Ritz-Carlton, Dana Point (Directions)
WHO CAN ATTEND: This special meeting is open to the general public
    QUESTIONS: Contact us

Join the 60 members of the Monarch Beach Sunrise Rotary Club on Wednesday morning as our guest as we welcome our special guest speaker, Orange County District Attorney, Tony Rackauckas.

Tony Rackauckas is the first Orange County District Attorney in almost 40 years to be elected from outside the Office. Tony was recently elected in 2006, running unopposed. Previously, Tony was elected District Attorney by overwhelming margins of 22 points in 1998 and 2002 Tony saw this as a mandate by the public to refocus the Office's priorities.

Tony's first priority since taking Office in 1999 is to curb gang activity. He believes that street gang activity disenfranchises our citizens of their basic right to live in their communities free from the fear of becoming a victim of gang intimidation or violence. In the eight years that Tony has been in office, gang crime has decreased dramatically. Gang membership has decreased by 8,500 members, a reduction of 45 percent. There are 55 fewer gangs.

The Office takes a leadership role in employing the latest DNA technology to solve cases. Tony has often said that "DNA technology is the best thing to happen to law enforcement since the two-way radio."

"Protecting our community from sexually violent predators is a paramount responsibility. It goes without saying that we must be aggressive in prosecuting defendants like Samantha Runnion's killer in order to bring them to justice after they are caught. I want these sexual deviants to be on notice that new technologies such as DNA are making it increasingly difficult for them to get away with what they have done," Tony said. Tony is committed to continuing to pursue unsolved cold cases. The District Attorney's Office has investigated or solved hundreds of "cold cases" dating back as far as 1969. Tony also played an important role in the passing of Proposition 69, which requires all felony arrestees to submit their DNA profile into a national database. Tony is currently working to create a local DNA profile base to solve more crimes.

Tony is a leader in the battle to protect our natural resources. He increased the budget of the Environmental Protection Unit by 300 percent, which led to the first of its kind prosecution of three major oil companies to keep the drinking water safe for Orange County residents. As a result, these oil companies are cleaning up more than 300 gas station sites in the county at a cost that will likely exceed $100 million. All of the litigation was conducted at the cost of the oil companies and not the taxpayers.

Tony has taken an aggressive stance in the areas of identity theft, Workers' Compensation Insurance fraud, insurance fraud, and high tech crimes. He has increased the number of prosecutors, investigators, and support staff in the Economic Crimes Unit and made a commitment to give them the tools they need to track down high tech criminals. As a result, the Office is prosecuting the largest medical insurance fraud case in the nation, in which the defendants were flying in healthy patients for unnecessary treatment and fraudulently billing insurance companies. Collection of child support payments increased by 60 percent during Tony's first term until he handed the reigns over to a state agency under a new law. By holding deadbeat parents accountable, the burden on taxpayers was lessened.

Tony has led an office that prosecutes more than 70,000 cases a year with a felony conviction rate of over 90 percent. Tony recently returned $2 million to the County on behalf of the District Attorney's Office.

To learn more, please visit the OrangeCountyDA.com Web Site.

WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU AT THIS SPECIAL MEETING FEATURING THE OCDA, TONY RACKAUCKAS.

President's Message by Linda Knox Hess

    Vocational Day is November 5

Vocational Service, one of Rotary's Avenues of Service, encourages Rotarians to serve others through their professions and to practice high ethical standards. Observed each October, Vocational Service Month spotlights Rotary club projects related to this avenue that offer an opportunity for members to use their professional skills in service projects.

MBSR's 19th Annual Vocational Day will be November 5 and as members, you all will have an opportunity to help mould vocations of the future! Members and others will share their vocations and skills as our club hosts high school seniors for a very special morning and they 'job shadow' their vocation of interest.

As your President this year, I encourage you all to get involved, as this can be a life changing morning for a young adult. This event not only benefits students, but as Rotarians and business leaders, we share skills and expertise through our vocations and inspire others in the process. I find it extremely rewarding to serve as a driver and have lunch with the students. As we talk, I have an opportunity to share Rotary, the Four Way Test, inspire, and reap the joys of 'Service Above Self.'

Please be sure to read Vocational Service Chair Nan Eide's articles in the October 2008 MBSR newsletter and ask Nan how you can help make a difference in a student?s life November 5!
